Dr. Tim Downey, PT, DPT, CSCS

Overview

I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy and a seasoned professional in the field of strength & conditioning and run coaching. Over the course of ten years, I have continued to refine my expertise as a coach, working with athletes across the United States. I’ve coached the seasoned professional and collegiate athletes to dedicated amateurs from New York City to Boulder, Colorado, to California.

Background

My own years of experience with training began in Northern Michigan, joining the cross country team in high school as a way to stay in shape during tennis offseason. I was never the fastest, DNF’d a few races, but I found a sense of pride in working hard to see results. I quickly fell in love with the process and joined a small group training year round - incorporating cross training early on, from cross country skiing to snowshoe running, and strength training. Following high school, I shifted gears to strength training, before returning to focused running in 2016. My experience of running, from the mile to 50 mile, on the track, road, and trail, combined with my understanding of strength & conditioning both as an athlete and coach, allows me to connect with the athlete’s mindset and approach to training holistically. The idea of a strong runner looks different on every athlete - knowing there is no one size fits all to running bodies, I’ve found success across the board, from a 5:11 mile to a 6:11 50-miler to a sub 20 hour 100 miler - all over 180 pounds

Education

I recently returned to New York City after my successful completion of his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. My focus is in outpatient sports rehabilitation, working with athletes representing a diverse spectrum, from post-operative recovery to acute injury management. My approach to rehabilitation & coaching is rooted in a commitment to using evidence-based principles delivered with a personal focus based on the individual’s goals.

Injuries

Having navigated numerous sports-related injuries myself, from stress fractures to torn muscles and tissues and full fractures, I understand the drive of the athlete and how to get them back to training with appropriate interventions to improve strength, movement, and reduce risk of re-injury. I bring a wealth of personal experience and in-depth knowledge to each client interaction, driving a comprehensive approach to building training cycles, managing injuries, and building off-season recovery & fitness.
